Comme des Garçons

Unique scents both real and imagined.

Blackpepper

$5.00

It wasn’t until I smelled Blackpepper by Comme des Garçons that I found what I had been seeking – a unisex fragrance that is unconventional, but not strange or weird, and a joy to wear and to smell.

Blackpepper was launched in 2017 by Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons.

Ok, the name, Blackpepper kinda gives a hint as to what it smells like but this fragrance is so much more than cheap heat. It’s a love affair that will last through the ages…or as long as CdG makes it.

Black Play

$5.00

The Play Series is the first release under the CdG brand in a while, so I ordered samples of Red Play, Green Play and Black Play, and gave each them a thorough “play” test in jeans and tees.

LUXE Champaca

$8.00

Launched in 2007, LUXE Champaca is part of Comme des Garçons Series Luxe.

Comme des Garçons is known for its unusual scents – notes of plastic, burning rubber, dry cleaning fluid appear in many of their frags – but LUXE Champaca is a very straight forward, fairly linear floral based around champaca, the evergreen tree that is native to Southeast Asia.

Comme des Garçons 2

$5.00

Comme des Garçons, the unconventional Japanese design house headed by designer Rei Kawakubo, has been around since the early 90’s and is known for its unconstructed ‘anti-fashion’ minimalist asthetic.

Comme des Garçons 2, launched in 1999, is a 180 degree u-turn from those 80’s sillage monsters, and takes fashion design perfume art into new territory, into the minimalist aesthetic of Rei Kawakubo. Marc Buxton renders this minimalist style perfectly with CdG2, which is built around the smell of ink. Yes, ink.

Comme des Garçons Series 1: Leaves: Calamus

$6.00

Calamus is a really different perfume.

Launched in 2000, it was part of Comme des Garçons Series 1: Leaves, which included Mint, Lily, Shiso, and Tea and it’s by Bertrand Duchaufour. According to Denyse Beaulieu at Grain de Musc, it’s the scent that Duchaufour “pinpoints as the first to truly bear his signature."

Monocle Scent Two: Laurel

$6.00

Monocle Scent Two: Laurel is the second scent to come from the collaboration of design house Comme des Garçons and Monocle magazine. The first scent they produced was Monocle Scent One: Hinoki  - a real stunner and one of my all-time faves, so when they came out with Laurel, I had to try it, then of course, I had to buy it.

The Monocle web site says that the inspiration for Laurel was “…a trip to the Bekaa Valley…it will remind regular visitors to Lebanon of the country's hand-made laurel soaps and fragrant gardens in Byblos.”

Stephen Jones

$8.00

Launched in 2008, Stephen Jones is the result of a partnership between Comme des Garçons, radical design house and Stephen Jones, radical British milliner.

$8.00

LUXE Patchouli

$8.00

Comme des Garçons is known for its  unusual scent series, and with the 2007 LUXE series they offer concentrated EdP scents  made in small batches with ultra high quality ingredients. LUXE Patchouli is classified as a woody/spicy fragrance for women and men.

I think the name is misleading – it says LUXE Patchouli, but it is about much, much more. The openers are the signature CdeG notes of pepper and incense, spicy and warm then drying quickly as the resinous woody oak emerges.

Comme des Garçons Daphne

$5.00

This Oriental is a floral with a difference - the bitter orange and saffron notes keep it out of the traditional, and give it a very modern vibe. The white floral heart is softened by iris, amber and vanilla. Oud and patchouli provide a woody smoky base for this full and  luscious  EdP. Great sillage and very-long lasting on the skin.
