Lys Mediteranee

$7.00

Launched in 2000, Lys Mediteranee was created by master perfumer Edouard Fléchier for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.

There’s a dried lily in the gutter of one of my old journals beside an entry about a romantic dinner on a restaurant terrace on the promenade in Menton on a late summer’s evening years ago. There’s a stain on the page with an arrow pointing to the the lily and the words: “Lys Mediteranee – Malle – buy it” beside it.

Outrageous

$5.00

According the Malle website, “the idea for Outrageous poured out of a Caipirinha cocktail in Brazil: samba on the beach, bursts of orange and blue in low light, crashing waves and the ecstatic laughs of the young and sexy. It’s dramatic, festive and colorful, what Frédéric likes to call “clean sex appeal”. The original 2007 version of Outrageous was developed for Barney's in NYC , and sold exclusively through the US Barney stores. Now there is a new 2017 version.

Lipstick Rose

$5.00

Lipstick Rose smells glamorous. One of the original scents in the Frederic Malle line launched in 2000, I only discovered its charms in the past year. Created by Ralf Schwieger (Hermes Eau de Merveille, Iris Nazarena for Aedes des Venustus, Barney’s L’Wren Scott, plus many others), and inspired by his childhood memory of the smell of his mother’s lipstick when she kissed him goodnight, Lipstick Rose is, according to the Malle website,  “A vision of glamorized femininity, in technicolor. A perfume that smiles at you, like a dash of lipstick…”

Eau de Magnolia

$6.00

Launched in 2014 by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, Eau de Magnolia by Carlos Benaïm was inspired by the scented candle he created for the house based on magnolia called Jurassic Flower. Here the magnolia is light and transparent.

I love the intense, lush, creamy aspects of magnolia in fragrances, but what I love about  Eau de Magnolia is how Benaïm has highlighted the other aspects of it – the lemony, fresh, flora aspects – in a beautifully balanced EdP.

Vetiver Extraordinaire

$5.00

Right now I’m sniffing vetiver, which I think is one of the truly beautiful notes in perfumery. Some people think of vetiver as a masculine, I think its unique character transcends the whole male/female discussion, and should simply be called sublime. This version under my nose is Vetiver Extraordinaire by Dominique Ropion for Frédéric Malle, a fragrance I’ve loved for years and finally added to my collection.

Une Fleur de Cassie

$5.00

WOW! This opening is animalic, carnal almost, pungent but dry and green all at the same time, a bitter sweetness that’s intoxicating and so complex I have no idea what I’m smelling. All I know is that I’ve never smelled this accord before. I read the box-notes and see that this accord is built on the cassie flower note, mixed with mimosa, violet, and indolic jasmine – it’s strange, disturbing, voluptuous and incredibly beautiful.
