HEELEY Parfums

Coccobello

$4.00

Anytime I want a sublime tropical beach experience, Coccobello perfume by James Heeley is the perfect ticket. Launched in 2013, Coccobello opens with a gentle green note from palm leaves along with a note of coconut water - not coco butter, suntan lotion or the sweetened coconut used in baking. It smells tropical, it smells good but when a quiet floral note of indolic gardenia wafts through it, Coccobello soars.

Hippie Rose

$4.00

Hippie Rose opens with a fresh accord of oak moss, bergamot and green notes, which likely includes musk because right way I detect that soft salty-skin undertone of musk mixed in with the citrusy mossy earthiness of the top-notes. This fresh accord is sitting on top of patchouli, lovely green-herbal natural patchouli, not dark-musty-sweet-heavy-head-shop patchouli. It all smells light and airy, and full of promise.

Sel Marin

$4.00

James Heeley’s gorgeous sea scent, Sel Marin opens with lemon and bergamot as it blooms on the skin a salty note appears. Algae adds a green note and perfectly balances the salt so that it never smells ‘salty’, just smells of the sea.
At the base, vetiver gives it backbone while cedar and birch give it a cool, conifer woodiness.

This is not a day at the beach, this is the siren song of the beautiful interplay of sea and damp conifer forest. Breathe in, breathe out…..

Cuir Pleine Fleur

$5.00

The literal translation “leather full flower” actually means Full Grain Leather, the outer layer of the hide with all the scars and marks, but as Luca Turin points out, the name is also a clever play on the word “fleur” because this fragrance is a floral leather, rare in the perfume world. It was created by James Heeley, a perfumer who Gwen and I really admire.

Iris de Nuit

$5.00
iris image

Modern and chic - that phrase springs to my mind when I think of the work of James Heeley. A young British designer who lives in France, his fragrances convey a confident, uncluttered,  charming and refined quality, which is especially evident in Iris de Nuit.

The iris scent is difficult to do well - it can be overly dry, bordering on funereal, or too sweet, which obscures the unique iris smell. Serge Lutens' Iris Silver Mist is the funereal, Guerlain's Iris Ganache is the sweet.

Cardinal

$6.00
passage du desir

I am a big fan of James Heeley’s scents. His creative compositions really resonate with me.

In Cardinal the top note is rose with and black pepper, which gives it heat and spiciness. Then magical incense appears, while amber, patchouli and vertiver make up the base.

That’s what in it, what makes it stunning is that it takes incense and makes it light and clean, not dark and gloomy (dark and gloomy do have their charms by the way, but we’ll save that discussion for another day).
