Magie Noire means Black Magic. It was launched by Lancôme in 1978, and is a Woody Oriental that is often mistaken for a chypre,  It’s gone through a few re-formulations since 1978, but its great bones are still there, at least they are in the EdT I purchased which is circa late 1990’s, early 2000's.

This is a dark fragrance which is reveals itself in layers. It can’t be described as pretty or feminine, rather it has a Victor/Victoria androgynous quality, but with a powerful sensuality. It starts with dry green notes, edged with cat-pissy sulphur and ammonia, then develops a raw-fruit raspberry and blackcurrent (cassis) accord wrapped around dark red rose buds – with thorns. As the minutes pass, the rose sweetens only slightly and the dark mood builds.

After thirty minutes or so, a honeyed aspect appears mixing with  narcotic white florals, and the forbidding dark rose opens and sweetens the heart somewhat, but the green top notes continue to waft strongly in the background, blending with the animalic base notes as they start to develop.

Dry galbanum and green vetiver and patchouli mix with civet and castoreum resulting in a sueded leather note, and then the base becomes softer and mellowed with incense and musk, and just a hint of a burnt caramel note. Never sweet or floral, the waft is aromatic and luscious and the scent stays on the skin for hours, pulling the nose with its siren call.

Magie Noire magically morphs from layer to layer, each one sensual and potent, and different from the one that precedes it.  To fully appreciate its beauty, it requires experience and a developed sensibility, patience to wait for the changes, and a desire to explore the dark side of scent.
