Waking to birds warbling and chirping, waiting for the first rays of dawn to come through the bedroom windows, hearing the quiet in the house, is a special part of the day for me. When the day turns into one of those perfect summer days that are only in dreams…days with perfect golden-yellow sunlight and warm scented air filled with the sounds of people, laughter and music so in tune with your life, it’s magic. Those kind of days become forever etched in memory.

Today is one of those days for me, And I have a fragrance to help me remember how perfect it’s been. I didn’t plan it. The bright morning sunshine that bathed our balcony as I sipped my morning coffee was my inspiration to wear Soleil Liquide. Its name – Liquid Sunshine - captured exactly how I was already feeling about the new day. One of the five Reserve Editions fragrances launched in 2009 by Mémoire Liquide, a small West Coast niche brand which makes bespoke fragrances from pure essences and essential oils in select retailers such as Fred Segal in LA and Bendels in NYC, Soleil Liquide is a fragrance I've owned for a couple of years but not worn much, probably a result of testing it in colder Fall weather when white florals and I lose the love. That’s definitely changed since today.

Soleil Liquide is a citrus with white florals and musk, a simple scent with a divinely pure aspect to it. The citrus in the top is delicious and drinkable, the tangerine and blood orange first for the juicy effect, followed up by the grapefruit which gives the citrus opening a zesty bitterness as it develops. After the first five minutes, the citrus accord has an edge of candied rind which sweetens the citrus but still maintains the juiciness.

The note list is short but the ingredients are excellent quality, which accounts for its simple charm, I think. In the heart, the aromatic grapefruit, tangerine, and blood orange accord blends with neroli flowers, the magical scent of orange blossom, honeyed and jasmine-like. These white blossoms are gentle and weightless, never becoming heavy or overpowering, but they elegantly soften the citrus.

In the drydown, I can identify creamy sandalwood and musk, two notes that always create a smooth finale for any fragrance, but in Soleil Liquide, as with the other notes, they become part of the whole rather than demanding centre stage -there are no distracting woody or animalic notes in Soleil Liquide. As the sun goes down in the evening the scent smells soft and slightly floral sweet, still fresh and aromatic and natural, just like the back garden as I wander through admiring our lush growth and colourful pots of blooms.

Soleil Liquide was made for summer days – simple and natural-smelling but fresh and lively for many hours on my skin, it truly made me feel happy as I sniffed my wrists throughout this sunny day. Its brand, Mémoire Liquide, (Liquid Memory) was created by two sisters, Robin and Jennifer Coe, both passionate about fragrances, who built their belief in the intertwining nature of scent and memory into the heart of their business.

The inside cover of the charming gold-trimmed book-box which contains Soleil Liquide says, “Remember…Be Remembered.” That won’t be difficult when I wear this gorgeous fragrance.

Soleil Liquide is listed in our Decant Store. Decants are $4.00 for 1 ml.
