Thanksgiving Day in Toronto - October14, 2013

Photo - perfumeniche.com - Thanksgiving Day Toronto 2013

Today is Thanksgiving Day in Canada. It's always a few weeks ahead of  the U.S. Thanksgiving celebrations, but it's about the same things - harvest and home, and giving thanks for both. So no "New Fragrance" post today........

The photo above was taken on our street while I was outside talking with a neighbour. We commented on all the good smells that wafted past as we caught up on news of each other's families - the scents of stuffed turkies roasting, barbecues smoking, and pies baking - apple and pumpkin pies. Mmm.

Sniffing the smell of pies baking in the autumn air made me think of Thanksgiving days from my life many years ago, and standing there talking with my neighbour I had a powerful nostalgic yearning for my childhood Home...there's no place like home, Auntie Em, there's no place like home....

A perfume I've written about perfectly captures this same feeling of yearning for home - Tilda Swinton - Like This, from Etat Libre d'Orange. It has notes of tangerine, ginger, pumpkin, immortelle flower, neroli, rose , heliotrope , vetiver and musks. It's the pumpkin and ginger notes that draw me in, but the scent as it dries down transforms from gourmand to an intimate comfort scent. In Tilda Swinton's words from the Etat Libre website:

“I have never been a one for scent in a bottle. I have always located my favourite fragrances at the doorways of kitchens, in the heart of a greenhouse, at the bottom of a garden. Scent means place to me: place and state of mind - even state of grace. Certainly state of ease. My favourite smells are the smells of home.”

Her scent "Like This"  is exactly that - a scent of place, and state of mind, and a state of ease. It's the perfect scent for this Thanksgiving Day.
