Eau de Sud – A "go-to" scent (June 16, 2010 New Fragance Listing)

I want to talk about summer – summer scents, that is.

I’m not what I call a “freshy” or a citrus lover – I want a smell more complex than a simple lemon, an orange, or a beach. BUT -  in the heat of summer my preferences can be fickle, and suddenly I’m scrambling to find the fresh scents at the back of my perfume stash.

My two go-to favourites are Jo Malone’s Lime Basil and Mandarin, and Annick Goutal’s Eau de SudLike my BFF, I have a weakness for Annick Goutal fragrances, especially the citrus ones the line does so well....- Eau d’Hadrien, Les Nuits d’Hadrien, Mandragore, the newer Ninfeo Mio, and  – Eau de Sud, which I find the most interesting, and still like the best.

What’s so special about Eau de Sud?  The listed notes are bergamot, mandarin orange, grapefruit, lemon verbena, peppermint, basil, persian lime, and woods. The first spritz on my skin releases a blast of intense lemon citrus, slightly bitter with bergamot and grapefruit. I breathe in deeply, and discover it is unexpectedly loaded with black pepper! The scent is dry, rich and thick, almost sneeze-inducing!

The initial top notes recede, and the green basil and mint mix discreetly with the citrus, creating a slightly salty, almost smokey accord, but the lemony goodness continues. After about fifteen minutes, I notice an unusual note, something that smells like........sweat??.....male sweat!! Is it from the lime? the basil?.... Whatever the source, it's verrry sensuous. And then it fades, and the scent softens into the faintly sweet, musk and wood base notes, becoming warmer and darker.

This is not your run-of-the-mill fresh scent. The big difference is that it is a beautifully and fully rendered complex fragrance. If Goutal’s most famous citrus, Eau d’Hadrien is sweet and flirty, Eau de Sud is much more grown-up, earthy and sensuous.
Eau de Sud is a  true unisex fragrance, which easily crosses the female/male divide, and it has much better sillage, and lasting power than Eau d’Hadrien, or even most citrus fragrances, for that matter - one application lasts all day.
Summer never smelled so good!
Today we're adding Eau de Sud to our fragrance sample offering. Sample price is $5.00.
