02 Paris-New York

$5.00

In 2009 Guerlain introduced its Les Voyages Olfactifs series. There are three scents in the series - 01Paris-Moscow, 02 Paris-New York and 03 Paris-Tokyo and each one is a take on its namesake city from a Parisian perspective. All three are stunners, but it was 02 Paris-New York is a real standout.

It opens softer than most frags with Mandarin orange, bergamot and pink berries, along with Guerlain’s trademark vanilla signifying that Paris is where this journey starts. The opening is a perfect elegant, balance of sweet and tart. At the middle cinnamon adds a warm spiciness to a candied chestnut note while orange blossom adds a floral note to the mix. A Christmasy cedar note soon appears – ah yes, the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center the brochure mentioned – along with earthy, mouldy rich patchouli and vetiver.  Musk softens it all down at the drydown.

For me, 02 Paris-New York is the smell of Christmas in New York the way you think it should be - without the crowds, the traffic and all the noise. But labeling it that way does it a disservice too, because it is more than that. This is a shimmering, elegant perfectly balanced EDT – not too sweet, not too harsh, with a lightness about it that makes it wearable anytime of year.
