To my nose it's 'true lavender', lavandula angustifolia, fragrant, fresh and camphorous. A burst of citrus fruits joins the lavender: tart, nose-tingling bergamot, orange-faceted neroli and notes of succulent orange and vibrant lemon, which add a sharpness to the lavender. Verbena, lemon-tinged and green faceted, bridges the lavender to herbaceous, camphorous rosemary and cool, refreshing mint. Then I catch a whiff of civet. At this stage it adds a gentle warmth and muskiness to the mix. As it develops, the smell of sweet, fresh hay emerges from coumarin and is soon joined by a floral bouquet of rose, geranium, tuberose and jasmine. There is a spiciness here, likely from the geranium; apart from that, the flowers aren't distinct notes; instead, they give the impression of a floral scented breeze wafting through a garden. The civet gets more pronounced now, smelling like warm sexy skin; it slithers through the juice like a snake through the garden. To my nose, it smells like true lavender grown in Haute-Provence - fragrant, fresh and so camphorous it's heady. A note of pepper adds a smouldering warmth and a touch of earthiness, while cardamom adds a spicy sweetness to top. The advertising blurb for Mont de Narcisse says these two spices represent the scent of volcanic soil in the area – I'll have to take their word for it. As it mellows, immortelle appears, displaying its hay and honey facets. This is just flat-out gorgeous! Slowly, the narcissus appears. Let's press pause here for a minute. The narcissus used in Mont de Narcisse is Poet's narcissus, the jewel in the crown of plants that grow in the Auvergne region. The scent of narcissus oil is rich and complex with facets of iris, rose, hyacinth, jasmine, tuberose, orange blossom and ylang-ylang. It's heady and opulent, green and floral, and one of the most sought-after flowers used in perfumery. I smell it here, but it has an ethereal quality, as though I was picking up the scent in a spring breeze. Green notes add a sense of place: we are in a meadow. A note of plum adds a fruity dimension to the heart, while Osmanthus adds a creamy sensuality to the narcissus. Narcissus has a leather facet, and Osmanthus amplifies it with its own leather aspect, taking it down to the base where it rests on birch – woody, sweet and green-tinged. Vanilla is here too, more cozy than sweet, giving Mont de Narcisse the smoothness of suede that creates a certain intimacy.

The drydown is complex, smooth, complex, and so refined, it smells great on both men and women. To my mind, it’s not the smell of a hockey puck or a rubber suit – it’s the smell of new car tires. I can’t think of a better note that defines the sophisticated man about town than this one. The rubber smell comes from Lapsang Souchong tea, which gives Black a soft, seductive, smokiness. This smokiness is steeped through the entire fragrance. Jasmine links to the tea. Here it’s green and gently floral, its opulence holds the rubber smell in check so that it never becomes harsh or overbearing. Woody notes - cedarwood and sandalwood - usher in a note of sensuous, supple leather. I smell musk, which heightens the animalic aspect of the leather just as sweet, creamy vanilla shows up. Jacques Guerlain named his creation "Mitsouko" after the heroine in the 1909 novel 'La Bataille' by French author Claude Farrère.

The Mitsouko EdP perfume story opens with a note of sparkling bergamot flanked by tart, bright lemon. In the novel, Farrère says the name Mitsouko means 'honeycomb' and honey-faceted mandarin orange along with the honey blossom aspect of neroli are a nod to the character. The sweet juiciness of the orange, along with the sweet, floral neroli, smoothes out the tartness of the bergamot and lemon. As it progresses, a note of fresh, juicy peach comes forward. It's not really peach, but C14 aldehyde, which smells like a peach with aspects of apricot, mango, and apple along with milky undertones. My nose processes it as peachy, fruity, creamy, fatty and stunning! A note of clove warms the fruit so that it smells like a sun-drenched peach just plucked from a tree. Peaches are a luscious, sensual fruit - juicy, fleshy, covered in soft cashmere-like down, they call out to be held and caressed, so when its scent is joined by heady, opulent jasmine and rich, sweet ylang-ylang and lush, deep rose, well, there's no going back. Dry cinnamon and coriander temper the tea’s darkness, while cumin adds a warm, slightly sweaty intimacy, bringing the whole fantasy closer to the skin. The room smells of woodsmoke, worn leather boots, and hot metal. A note of smoky, woody birch tar deepens the illusion of a wood-burning fireplace, while cade and juniper help create the distinctive scent of Russian leather that I find so enticing.
