Insolence - Seductive, feminine, powerful

The luscious colours and smells from our May garden have got my senses reeling, I’m craving perfumes that mirror that same fresh sweetness. Violet, iris, tulips, (a tulip variety in the front garden smells incredibly like burnt sugar), hyacinth, narcissus, lilac…my nose hungers for more. Give me more.

How about Insolence Eau de Parfum? The untested sample I came across in my sample decant stash convinced me after just a single spritz to order a bottle of the Eau de Parfum, so for the past few days I’ve been exploring a perfume category I’ve avoided like the plague up to now: sweet fruity florals. How did I end up here? Simple -  Insolence is from Guerlain,  created by Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel, so this is a sweet fruity floral done right.

Insolence is a powerhouse perfume, like the best of the Guerlain classics , ShalimarL’Heure BleueApres l’Ondee, iconic scents which were considered to be extremely provocative when first introduced to the perfume world. Insolence eau de toilette was launched in 2006, and marked Guerlian’s entry into the fruity floral/gourmand category aimed at the younger female consumer, a trend which started with Mugler’s game-changing Angel. Insolence eau de parfum was released in two years later in 2008, and has the same powerhouse character as the original EdT but is more subdued and controlled, richer and warmer with none of the off-putting synthetic “hairspray” top-notes.

From the first moments out of its lovely Guerlain "Bee" bottle, Insolence eau de parfum is ultra-feminine with bold tart-sweet notes of ripe raspberry and violet in the opening, which quickly moves into a floral heart of violets and iris and rose, their tender powdery notes deepened with sweet rich orange blossom. As this floral heart accord takes hold, the famous Guerlinade vanillic warmth from the tonka note develops, which in the dry-down is accented with satiny sandalwood resins and animalic musks so that the full-blown feminine waft trails with seductive force.

The plush scent avoids the boring abstraction of other fruity florals, it's sweet but not sugary or girly, and feels full and textured and natural. One or two spritzes are all that’s needed! Insolence is so perfectly balanced that the individual notes weave through and around each other and in and out of the main accords, avoiding the typical pyramid dry-down structure.  At the end of the day I could still enjoy red raspberry sweetness, feel the cool purple sensation of violet and iris, and was stirred by the mouth-watering aphrodisiac of the caramel-vanilla scent of tonka bean.

Insolence lives up to its name, pushing perfume boundaries with a scent that is so captivating and gloriously original, a scent which owns a waft that is undeniable, and undeniably beautiful.

Insolence eau de parfum is sophisticated, ultra-feminine with a streak of rebellion – “I’m here, a WOMAN, I love this fragrance…indulge me!”

Insolence EdP is listed in our Decant Store. Decants are $6.00 for 1 ml.
