Mauboussin – It’s a gem! (February 21, 2011 New Fragrance Listing)

OK, pencils all sharpened, lined up with their points facing the same direction, soft jazz playing in the background, glass of prosecco within easy reach…and we begin.

One of my favourite perfumes has to be…

PUFFF – Devil appears on Gwen’s left shoulder.

Devil on left shoulder: What rose scent are you gonna write about today?
Gwen: Hey, when did the voice inside my head start coming from a devil on my shoulder?
DOLS: It’s an old plot device used for showing inner conflict of a character  – just play along.
Gwen: I always do. But usually the DOLS resembles the host and I have to tell you I’d never wear those earrings and your hooves need attention.
DOLS: Look hot stuff, I’m not here to talk about me, I wanna know what rose scent you’re  gonna write about today.
Gwen: I wasn’t thinking of writing about a rose scent.
DOLS: You’re not serious. Rose-based frags are really popular now. I mean, you could rename the blog roseperfumeniche.com.
Gwen:  That’s the point, everybody is talking about roses!
DOLS: Yeah, but dirty, nasty, thorny roses?
Gwen: Well, I do love a skanky rose and there are some great ones out there yet to be discussed…
PUFF - Angel appears on left shoulder
Gwen: Who are you?
Angel on right shoulder: I’m the angel on your right shoulder.
Gwen:  What are you doing here?
AORS: Gettin kind of crowded in your head.
DOLS: She always shows up shortly after I do. It’s part of the whole plot device thing.
Gwen: I learn so much writing these blogs….
AORS: She was talking about dirty skanky rose perfumes. Why does it have to be that way? Roses are beautiful, everybody loves them, and they are a symbol of love. You should write about sweet roses, lovely elegant rose scents…
DOLS: You mean old lady rose? Blech.
Gwen: Well, thank you both for your two scents worth, but it’s time to go in a different direction.  I’m gonna write about Mauboussin
DOLS: Oh, that is a beauty. One of my all time faves!
AORS:  Mine too. Tell us more about it.
Gwen: Mauboussin is a jewelry house, with a flagship boutique in Place Vendôme in Paris.  It is a family owned business with roots going back to 1827.  Mauboussin for women is the fragrance they launched in 2000. The nose behind it is Christine Nagel, who is known for creating rich oriental frags.  Mauboussin is an outstanding example of her work.
It opens with bergamot and citrus and rich, jammy plum, a light note of sweetness carries it to the middle where peach, another stone fruit, appears.  Jasmine and ylang-ylang add a floral dimension. Turkish rose also shows up at the heart. From the same plant family, Rosaceae, as the stone fruit, it echoes and bolsters them here. Amber and cedar give it a resinous base, patchouli gives it an earthiness and warmth, while sandalwood gives it a woodiness.  A touch of vanilla gives it a note of exotic sweetness.
Mauboussin is a gorgeous oriental. Big, rich and deep but not loud or in-your-face. And while the fruity notes may make it sound sweet, it isn’t predominantly so – the amber, patchouli and cedar make sure of that – everything is in perfect balance.
DOLS:  Wow – Mauboussin sounds divine.
AORS:  Yeah, why don’t you spray some on your shoulders sometime?
Gwen: Why don’t you make dinner tonight?

Gwen: Perfect. That question always clears a room.
