Mon Précieux Nectar – The Guerlinade effect – March 15, 2013 New fragrance Listing.

It’s a grey day in the city. Still cold, around the freezing mark, the snow is mostly all melted from the past few warm days, people still wearing puffy coats and scarves, but you can feel Spring in the air, just waiting to bust out. The day calls for some Guerlinade.

Guerlainade – quoi?  Guerlinade refers to the distinctive accord that’s found in many Guerlain scents.  How to describe it? Some perceive it as a sweet pastry note, others as an almondy floral, which I guess can be summed up as a floral gourmand. The Guerlinade accord appears in Aprés l’Ondée, L’Heure Bleue, and Shalimar in the 1920’s, among others, and also in contemporary Guerlain scents such as Quand Vient la Pluie in 2007, and Mon Précieux Nectar in 2009. A legend in the perfume world, it’s a thing of beauty and I’ve come to accept the fact that I’m seriously addicted to it.

Today I’m wearing Mon Précieux Nectar.  Where Aprés l’Ondée is pale, weightless and Spring-like, smelling like the earth and ethereal flowers touched by rain, restrained and refined, Quand Vient la Pluie is a little bolder and deeper, with a caramelized, nutty, musky ambiance, making it richer, and more curvy. Mon Précieux Nectar seems to go a step further than either, is brighter, more playful , and the result is a heavenly scent.

The opening of citrus and almond has an almost bitter bite to it, then jasmine and orange blossom sweeten up into the heart, evoking the infamous pastry accord from the mix of almond and orange – Ladurée macarons come to mind. But this sweetness is softened as this Guerlinade accord expands into the heart with vanilla, creamy sandalwood and guaiacwood (myrhh). Mon Nectar Précieux becomes smooth as silk, and soft as a baby’s bum. Incense and powdery musk are in the base, which balance the sweetness, and give nuanced depth, blending the edges and bringing everything into soft focus so that I feel enveloped in a cloud of pure joy. Am I back in the womb? Am I on drugs? It’s just the Guerlinade effect!

Mon Précieux Nectar has classic bones but the incense and woods in the base give it the urban factor – hints of smoke and tobacco  - which flesh it out and distinguish it from Aprés l’Ondée and Quand Vient la Pluie. There’s a warm sensuality underneath its sweet polished surface, a little sassy, a little edgy, which makes the retro Guerlinade accord feel brand new.

Mon Précieux Nectar, My Precious Nectar, is a pure parfum, so one dab on the wrists is all I wear - it’s all I need, and stays close to me. Just enough to keep me enjoying the magic of the Guerlinade effect as I wait for Spring.

Mon Précieux Nectar is listed in our Decant Store. Decants are $6.00 for 1 ml.
