New in niche

L’Artisan is expanding its Grasse Collection. Launched in 2012 with two candles, L’Automne and L’Hiver, and scented leather gloves (perfumed with Mûre et Musc Extrême), the line now expands to include an EDP called Caligna and two new candles, Le Printemps and L’Été. According to a press release, the new perfume is a woody aromatic honouring clary sage. Created by perfumer Dora Baghriche-Arnaud, the fragrance marries clary sage with notes of fig and a jasmine marmalade accord. The base features pine needles. But that’s not all that’s notable about this perfume. For the first time, L’Artisan is using a “face” to “represent the spirit of the fragrance”: Gudrun Ghesquiere, a classically trained dancer. The fragrance will be available in early April in L’Artisan boutiques, concessions and on their website.

Vintage appeal

I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s worth a second shout-out: If you’re searching for an elusive vintage ‘fume, it’s worth checking out’s sales forum. There’s lots of new stuff for sale there too, but I’ve had especially good luck with vintage items. On its way to me now: a bottle of Or Black! I sniffed the gorgeous ‘fume in a decant from Gwen and Kay and was smitten. Now, I can’t wait to get my own FB! Want to check out Or Black yourself? Kay and Gwen have it on offer.

Deals, deals, deals

Looking for a luxurious oriental? Check out Lalique Le Parfum, currently available in a 3.3. oz spray EDP on for $49, down from a retail price of $155. This yummy frag was created by the insanely talented Dominique Ropion (his list of hits includes Frederic Malle’s Carnal Flower, Geranium Pour Monsieur, Portrait of a Lady, Une Fleur de Cassie and Vetiver Extraordinaire; Armani’s Acqua di Gioia; Kenzo Jungle L’Elephant and Jungle le Tigre and many, many more). Notes include west indian bay, bergamot, pink pepper, jasmine, heliotrope, almond, sandalwood, tonka bean, patchouli and vanilla. Interested in a decant to sniff before you commit to the FB? Gwen and Kay have it on offer.

Nosing around

News of L’Artisan’s Caligna sent me to my computer to look up the nose behind the scent, Dora Baghriche-Arnaud. Turns out she’s also the nose behind Vanitas for Versace, Oriflame’s Fuse, and Olfactive Studio’s Still Life. A graduate of the ISIPCA School of Perfumery in 2005, she trained further with Firmenich in Geneva. According to the Olfactive Studio website, she was inducted as a perfumer at age 30. One to watch! (And I’ll be asking Gwen and Kay to pop a decant of Still Life in the mail for me: they have it here.)

Makes me want to try it

One way to explore fragrance is by setting out to sniff stuff that has an ingredient you find appealing. For me, clary sage is one of those ingredients, which is why I’ll be checking out L’Artisan’s new launch mentioned above, Caligna. Other ‘fumes that feature the note include Cowboy Grass by D.S. & Durga, Etro’s Vetiver, Clinique’s Aromatics Elixir, Andy Tauer’s Vetiver Dance, Weil’s Antilope, Yves Saint Laurent’s Kouros and Body Kouros, Hermes Equipage, Tauer’s Lonestar Memories, Chanel Cuir de Russie, Slumberhouse Ore, Carven’s Ma Griffe and many more. Interested in exploring ‘fumes by note? Check out, where you can click on “Notes” above the search bar and then find perfumes by note. Oh, and what does clary sage smell like? Fragrantica describes it this way: “bracing herbaceous scent that smells like lavender with leathering and amber nuances.” Check out some of the frags Kay and Gwen have on offer that feature clary sage here.

Just because

I love hanging out on’s fragrance board: the folks are friendly, and I learn so much. Here’s a gem that was shared last week by jwhitcomb: a lovely short scent film, called The Perfume Man from Taksim. The link will take you to perfume blog Glass Petal Smoke, where you can read the backstory and watch the short film. Enjoy!
