New in niche

By Kilian has released two new ‘fumes, both by nose Calice Becker: Imperial Tea, “the olfactive impression of an authentic Jasmine tea”; and Sacred Wood, “the olfactive impression of the authentic Sandalwood from Mysore.” Notes for Sacred Wood include sandalwood, polished woods, cedarwood, incense, and hot spices. Becker is the nose behind many other By Kilian fragrances. Check out other By Kilian frags: Gwen and Kay have A Taste of Heaven and Beyond Love on offer.

Vintage appeal

This time of year always has me yearning for Diorissimo. The lovely 1956 creation by Edmond Roudnitska takes as its inspiration lily of the valley (or muguet), which, while not blooming quite yet here on Canada’s eastern coast, will be blooming in a month or so if the weather warms up! Another spring fave to try: Folavril by Annick Goutal. Gwen and Kay have it on offer.

As we head towards Mother’s Day, it’s worth signing up for enewsletters from your favourite online perfume sellers: many offer pre-Mother’s Day sales and discounts, with those on the email lists getting first notice. Check out,,,, and others.

Nosing around

Check out Calice Becker speaking about the process of inspiration when it comes to creating perfumes in this video on YouTube.

Makes me want to try it

Denyse Beaulieu on the blog Grain de Musc has a lovely piece on three Jean-Claude Ellena Hermès flankers: Bel Ami Vetiver, Terre d’Hermès Eau Très Fraîche and Jour d’Hermès Absolu. Based on her reviews, I’ll be searching them out!

Just because

Beaulieu says Ellena compares interpreting an Hermès classic to being a jazz musician riffing off a standard. In that spirit, here’s a little Oscar Peterson, live at Ronnie Scott’s in 1974.
