It’s March – yesterday it rained and today it snowed. I’m fed up. I mean, I love winter but I am tired of it. It’s not that I crave warmer weather, it’s that I crave a change. I’m ready to move on to spring. Ahh spring! Narcissi shoots pushing their way up through the earth, stronger longer daylight, wet ground, not frozen ground. It’s coming, it’s coming…just not today. [Insert expletive here.] There is some relief though. Odalisque from Parfums de Nicolaï. It’s green, gorgeous and the perfect harbinger of spring.
It opens with bergamot and mandarin, but soon the wild flowers show up: creamy lily-of-the-valley, jasmine and dry woody orris root. Oakmoss, earthy, bitter and salty/sweaty is at the heart as well. Musk at the base adds an animalic note, while softening the whole composition and making it sophisticated – never too sharp or jagged, but not shy either. It is very much a French perfume.
Odalisque is the first tremble of spring - wild flowers coming to life in the thawing wet woods and it might just be the only thing that sustains me over the next couple of weeks.
By the way, the name Odalisque - I don’t get it. The Free Online dictionary says:
o·da·lisque: n. A woman slave in a harem.
Probably has some relation to the juice, but I don’t know what it is. What I can tell you is that around here it means:
o·da·lisque: n. 1. Gorgeous, green EDP created by Patricia de Nicolaï.
2. Try it
Odalisque is listed in our Decant Store. Decants are $5.00 for 1 ml.
