Created by Jacques Flori, Anice was launched in 2004 by Italian fashion house Etro.

Anice is ‘anise’ in English, and the word refers to both the herb and its licorice-like flavour. The seeds of the anise plant, called aniseed, are a spice. Anise contains a large amount of anethole, an aromatic compound that gives it a unique camphor scent similar to other spices and herbs such as star anise, caraway, fennel, licorice, dill, and basil.

It opens with vibrant, citrusy bergamot. Its nose-tingling freshness launches an explosive blast of licorice from Star anise, softened by its botanical, herbal facets. Rosewood adds peppery warmth as the scent moves to the heart. Here, anise takes center stage; its licorice edge is lifted by spicy caraway (often called German cumin), with dill highlighting its herbal side. A touch of fennel-like jasmine adds a smooth floral dimension, seamlessly blending into the sophisticated, buttery earthiness of iris. At the base, the caraway facet lingers, while vanilla adds a light, creamy sweetness. Musk and a golden hint of amber round it all out so that the drydown is not too sweet, not too green, not too harsh – just perfectly pitched.

Licorice, and its different expressions in anise, caraway, cumin, and fennel, is the star from start to finish. Highlighted by spicy, floral and earthy notes, it transitions beautifully from the crisp, licorice-heavy opening down into the warm, resinous base.

The fresh top notes give it a sheer, ethereal summer feel while the vanilla-and-amber base gives it a warm coziness that makes it perfect for cooler temperatures.

Notes: Bergamot, star anise, rosewood, fennel, German cumin (caraway), dill, jasmine iris, vanilla, musk and amber.
