Created by Bertrand Duchaufour for L’Artisan Parfumeur in 2010, Nuit de Tubereuse is a new interpretation of a familiar note: tuberose.

On me, it opens bright and sparkling with notes of pink pepper and citrus. I get soft glints of tuberose in the background as clove and cardamon show up with their spicy warmth and gentle sweetness. The clove has a camphorous facet that brings out the medicinal/minty aspect of tuberose. It’s complemented by a note of black pepper, which adds freshness to the top notes. It’s followed by green mango. Tart and green, it adds a layer of tropical freshness to the mix. I smell incense, dry, not smoky. It’s coming from a green mango/pink pepper accord, which shares a smoky facet with incense.  Red berries join the green mango, giving Nuit de Tubéreuse a sweet and juicy, fruity aspect.

At the heart, the tuberose comes out of hiding and calls in the flowers. Its orange blossom facet pulls in notes of orange blossom and ylang-ylang. The fresh and sensual orange blossom and custardy, banana-faceted ylang-ylang envelop the tuberose, muting it as it gently pulsates. A note of rose adds opulence and romance to the floral bouquet, while coconut and creamy gorse evoke the scent of sun-warmed skin that adds a summery feel to the heart.

As the florals soften the green, rooty side of tuberose is showcased in a botanical phase that’s herbaceous, earthy/mushroomy, rooty and wet. It comes from earthy, musky angelica, and earthy green, petitgrain, enhanced by the green mango. It all settles on a base of creamy, sweet sandalwood and smooth and velvety palisander rosewood. A note of musk is clean, warm and sensual.

Nuit de Tubéreuse dries down to fresh, sensual, sophisticated. The tuberose is present from top to bottom, but this is not the big-boned, vampy tuberose you might expect. This tuberose is a better-behaved, demure, multi-faceted tuberose: warm, cool, green, earthy, medicinal, sweet, sparkling, quiet, sunny and nocturnal. The interplay and harmony of its many aspects make it thrilling to wear.

Tuberose blooms at night, and Nuit de Tubéreuse is the experience of walking among the blooms in a tropical garden on a warm, steamy evening after a day in the sun.

Notes: Tuberose, pink pepper, citrus, cardamom, clove, black pepper, green mango, incense, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, rose, gorse, angelica, petitgrain, sandalwood, palisander and musk.
